Jay Z talks to Howard Stern Part 3 & 4

Again, I love this man. Jay knows he's the shit but he's modest about it. Howard is a racist..people try to give him a pass but at the end of the day he thinks Jay Z is a lucky nigga that made it big...some of his questions are very patronizing. Even with that being said, Howard is still able to get certain things out of Jay. Share your thoughts with me.

Wiz Khalifa-Real Estate

This beat is sick!

Neyo-Telekinesis

I've been a fan of Neyo since So Sick. And on every album I anticipate one song that makes me wanna sex up my man and a serious dance track. I don't need anything else from him but those two things. Here's one of my favorite songs from his new album Libra Scale, in stores now. Enjoy!

Nicki Minaj Doesn't Like Pickle Juice

Here's a clip from MTV's Nicki Minaj: My Time Now, which airs November 28th at 10pm. Nicki talks about how when women are assertive, we are labeled bitches and divas but how it's acceptable for dudes. Her tangents are hilarious to me. I never know whether or not to take her many personalities serious. She's simply a character. I would love to see her just kicking it, not putting on a show for cameras.

I'm not ashamed to be a Nicki Minaj fan. It happened by mistake I promise you. She makes me laugh, so I'm going to enjoy her while her career lasts. Oh and I love her Judy Jetson wig...so original.

Four Women- Kelly Price, Marsha Ambrosius, Jill Scott and Ledisi

These four beautiful and talented women performed this song on BET's Black Girls Rock a couple weeks ago. I still get chills every time I watch it. When I feel like giving up on R&B today, I am reminded that there is still talent out there. Support real artists. This is a true testament that black music is here to stay and I'm glad BET showcased quality artists for once. We need more of this, especially on the airwaves on mainstream radio. Don't make me start preaching.

Lil Kim Responds to Nicki Minaj

After Nicki went on Hot 97 and just shat on Kim, The Queen Bee finally responds. Kim said she gonna turn Pink Friday to Friday the 13th. Personally, I think Kim's diss is pretty lame. Oh Kim, Nicki is shaking in her Louboutins. Yea right!! Who wrote this wack ass diss for Kim? And wtf is menastrated? Kim now you know you can do BETTER! Is that the best you could come up with? Yall be the judge.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Ok... so I am thankful for a lot things: life, friends, family, job, health, my blog and the list goes on. But this Thanksgiving, I am especially thankful for PETA and the dark meat they brought me this holiday season. Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson is the latest celebrity to pose (cough) nude for PETA. See for yourself. For all you vegetarians reading , you might convert to meat lovers this year. I'm just saying. Enjoy!

New Chrisette Michele- Let Freedom Reign

Here's a new song off of Chrisette Michele's new album Let Freedom Reign, which hits stores November 30th. I'm previewing the album as I type and just like her other CDs, I'm not impressed. I'll probably have to sit on the CD for like a year or two or see her perform live to appreciate this body of work. But I do enjoy this single. Check it out.

Jay Z talks to Howard Stern (Part 1)

Jay Z stopped by Howard Stern's radio show to promote his new memoir, Decoded. I've got to read this book. I love the dynamic between the two. Howard can really be an asshole at times but this is one of my favorite Jay Z interviews. Hands down! By you and me I love a man with manners. Peep how polite Jay is to the "intern".

Tribute to Chaka Khan

I was in the mood for some good ole sanging. Check out this wonderful tribute to Chaka Khan featuring Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Fantasia and Angie Stone from the 2009 Soul Train Awards. Can you imagine a tour with those ladies?! What? Are you kidding! Well first, we'd all be deaf from all the hooting and hollering and hoarse from screaming back at them. Secondly, the show would be 5 hours long because all of them have 7 minute songs and a huge song catalog. But I'd spend my money to see it.

Kanye West & Jay Z feat La Roux-That's My B@$ch

New music surfaced today from Kanye West & Jay Z's collaborative album Watch The Throne and it's called That's My Bitch featuring synth pop sensation La Roux. This song doesn't move me AT ALL. I hope this song didn't make the cut. Listen via pinboardblog. Tell me what you think.

Diggy Simmons- Shook Ones

Who knew that lil Daniel "Diggy" Simmons would turn out to become one of our rising rap stars. He freestyled over Mobb Deep's Shook Ones. My favorite line is "Yall got Mickey D's pockets with caviar taste". That is so true Diggy. Preach boy! I got my eye on this fellow, who is looking more and more like his parents by the day. He signed with Atlantic earlier his year, but no word on when his album actually drops. Diggy just keep dropping mixtapes while we wait. Thanks.

Rihanna and Nicki Minaj Collabo

These two ladies both have albums that drop this month. Rihanna released her fifth album, Loud last week. While Nicki's album Pink Friday comes out November 22nd. They both feature on each other's album. I wonder are they new bff's now. Hmmm.

Here's another Ri Ri album that I can listen all the way to the end. It's a nice switch from the last album Rated R which was very dark and grimy. She seems to be in a happy place and who wouldn't be, dating cutie pie Mat Kemp. Listen to Raining Men featuring Nicki Minaj.

At first I was annoyed by the Pink Barbie aka Nicki Minaj, but now I'm just amused by her. She is the only female rapper in the game right now. Although she just shot venom at Lil Kim recently on the VIP Lounge with Angie Martinez. She's entirely too animated but I think that's what makes her so appealing to her fans. Listen to Fly by Nicki Minaj featuring Rihanna. Which song is hotter? You tell me. I enjoy both but if I had to choose one song it would be Raining Men because it's uptempo.

Nicki Minaj Throws Shots at Lil Kim

Woa! Nicki Minaj did an interview with Angie Martinez on Hot 97 in New York today. Damn Nicki goes in and she doesn't bite her tongue at all when it comes to Kim. She makes references to being the mother that has to reprimand her child but still loves her at the end of the day. I guess the Pink Barbie was tired of keeping her lips sealed about Kim, since Kim has been yapping at the mouth. If these two were smart, they'd record a song together to show female unity and shutdown i-tunes. Can you imagine how sick that song would be?

Thanks to Necole Bitchie for the audio.

Russell Simmons Writes Kanye A Letter

Dear Kanye,
I have early recollections of Damon Dash calling me and forcing me to put you on Def Poetry Jam.  I knew your record, "Through The Wire," but I didn't know much more.  When you took the stage on Def Poetry Jam that night, and spit those genuine, heartfelt words, I witnessed your specialness that Damon had emphatically told me about.
From that moment on, you became a poet who has inspired the poets.  I have proudly watched your career since then, and in case someone has missed the obvious, you are making a historical impact on music.  Your life story took a tough turn with the passing of your mother.  Although we grieved with you, we never really knew how much pain you were in.  We witnessed your moment at the MTV Music Awards and many of us dismissed it as, "oh that is just Kanye being Kanye."  The hard part of all of this, is that we have all had moments in our lives that have been challenging, painful and hard to overcome, however most of us just hide our emotions and never deal with that inner-struggle that we face on a daily basis.  As an artist, Kanye, you have always looked inside for your inspiration...always exuding emotions that are in us, but that we never expose.  That is what artistry is about...to look inside for what is unique.  With your journey towards a higher level of consciousness, a journey that we all are on, you have shown through your art a commitment to greatness.
The thirty minute film you most recently made was beyond brilliant.  Brilliance is not a word that can even begin to describe your ability to paint vibrant, vivacious, colorful yet muted paintings of poetry, music, costume, art, design and most important, passion.  The passion you put into your new album is why I stayed up all those nights in the early 80's trying to get DJs and radio stations to play our records.  I knew this day would come. Actually, maybe I didn't know, but I really, really hoped it would.  I didn't work this hard when I was your age to watch the culture go the wrong way.  And you, my friend, just took us to another level.  I am simply in awe.
With this power, as you know, comes great responsibility.  I am saying nothing you haven't heard before.  When you spoke about President Bush during the Katrina telethon, it was not the particulars of your words that mattered, it was the essence of a feeling of the insensitivity towards our communities that many of us have felt for far too long.  It was the image of the President, our President, the President of the United States Of America, peering out the window of an airplane, as the people on the ground were drowning, that hurt us the most.  For centuries, our people have relentlessly tread water as hard as they could to stay afloat, and here we were, literally drowning, and it felt like the President was insensitive.  There is no need to apologize, Kanye.  You spoke from your heart and that is all we will ever ask from you.  Don't be afraid of the press, as your art is your blueprint, thanks to Jay-Z, your big brother, we will always carry our destiny in our own hands.  You are are an artist whose art is masterful.  You are a servant to this world who no matter how hard it gets, keeps on giving.  Giving gifts that inspire us, challenge us and motivate us to be better family and friends.
Keep on, Kanye.  Keep on.  We love you.  We cherish you.  And we will always have your back.
-Russell Simmons

New Music: Marsha Ambrosius- Far Away

I am a huge Floetry fan and I still am holding a candle to their reunion. I love them together and separately. Check out the melodic sounds of Ms. Ambrosius performing her 2nd single Far Away from her new album Late Nights & Early Mornings at SOB's.

Nike LeBron 8 South Beach

Dayum this shoe is tight! I wish I wore tennis like these cuz I'd be on these heavy. Since Lebron moved to Miami to play for the Heat, Nike designed a sneaker called South Beach Lebron 8 aka Pre-Heat. I love the bright turquoise or aqua blue and the clear sole really does it for me. But my favorite part of the shoe is the tongue with the lion branded on it. Since I'm a leo at heart, this is totally hot!

Throwback Thursdays- Where Is The Love?

Ok so I know this song is extremely old and this rendition is 3 years old but I was watching Greys Anatomy last night and I heard it. What a lovely duet, if I must say so myself. Corrine Bailey Rae and John Legend's voices blend so well together. That John has a voice that sounds good with just about anybody. I'm going to start calling her Mr. Collabo. Enjoy

Nicki Minaj feat Drake- Moment For Life

I knew Nicki was capable of making a song without having turrets. Hopefully, she releases this as one of her radio singles. The more songs I  hear from this album, I'm actually thinking about buying it. Iunno yet. But that doesn't mean you can't go out and get her album, Pink Friday.  In stores November 22nd.

Chrisette Michelle Speaks About Rick Ross

So by now you've heard that Rick Ross walked out of the Soul Train Awards. I had no clue him and Chrisette were supposed to perform their song Aston Martin Music. Not only did he walk out, he left his friend hanging...no show for their performance. Meanwhile, he has yet to apologize to Chrisette about his #BITCHASSNESS. Rick lets do better you sore loser. I appreciate Chrisette keeping it 100. Make sure you watch the 2010 Soul Train Awards which airs November 28th at 9pm.

Marsha Ambrosius- Sextape Part 2

Marsha released part 2 of her Sextape mixtape series yesterday via twitter. This 13 minute mixtape features songs by Boyz II Men, Maxwell and Me’Shell NdegéOcello. Of course, Ms. Ambrosius is singing over top of the track. Her voice is so sensual. She could sing about Cheerios and that shit would sound good.

Only listen after 7pm. You've been warned. Wrap it up too.

Bilal- Tainted Love

Bilal covers Gloria Jones' Tainted Love. I love everything that this man does. He's just so damn emotional and expresssive on his songs. You can't help but not to feel what he's saying. And I love a man with a tattoo sleeve. Have mercy! Enjoy.

New Video: Rihanna ft Drake- What's My Name?

Over the weekend Rihanna premiered her video for her second single, What's My Name off of her upcoming album, Loud. The video itself isn't all that but I think Rihanna and Drake make a very cute couple. You know they used to mess around after her and Chris split. I wonder what Matt Kemp thought about his girl getting so close to her ex boo again.

Exclusive Sunshine Anderson Interview

I got a chance to sit down with Sunshine Anderson right before the release of her album The Sun Shines Again which is in stores now. Mostly known for her smash hit, Heard It All Before, there is more to this singer than just sassy lyrics. Her name is very fitting for she is a ray of sunshine. She reminds me of one of my cousins who doesn’t bite her tongue but is as genuine as someone who “keeps it real”. Sunshine talks about her love hate relationship with music, her 3 year hiatus and how becoming an independent artist has humbled her.

Chanel Laren: You seem to always come up with female anthems. Is that a true testament of who you are?

Sunshine Anderson: My ladies know that I’m going to stomp through the streets, kicking down the door for them. I love that. I’m going to say it exactly how it needs to be said, no holds barred. Let me give it back to you lyrically how you dish it. Let’s see can you take it then. What you see is what you get. I’m not that brash. I work very hard not to come across as so abrasive. I don’t want to be the nagging broad. My fellas approach me and say “I love your music but you be having me in the doghouse”. I say give me something to speak about and I won’t. I have a lot of girlfriends and we sit around just like this. You might get a line from me and a line or two from Keisha and Tammy. It’s all interwined.

CL: You have songs on the new album like A Warning for the Heart and Life Back…do you talk a lot about your divorce on the album?

SA: A lot of the record reflects that relationship. Not quite divorced yet, almost there. You do what comes natural first-what’s on your brain. You gotta get that out first before you can move forward. I can’t speak about butterflies and sunshine, if it aint butterflies and sunshine. Not direct jabs, but you know who I’m talking about. I wrote 3 songs on the album, Nervous, You Doing It and Life Back. Mike City and I are friends so we’d be on the phone for like an hour and a half just talking. I’d fly to California 2 months later and he’d have songs written about our conversations. I can’t deny that.

CL: Take us on a walk through your hiatus after you dropped the first album.

SA: I signed with Matthew Knowles Music World Entertainment label in 2004, my album didn’t come out until 2007. My hiatus between my first and second album was really bad. After they told me I was working with Matthew I was like “this is it, we are here, I have arrived, it’s on”. When it didn’t happen that way, I kinda felt like this is not for me. You dream about it a certain way, and when it doesn’t happen the way you dreamt it, you’re kinda thrown off. A lot of times I felt like where do I belong? Where do I fit in? I still don’t hear what you guys hear and still panicking before every show. At the time I was pregnant, so I thought I was building a family and a great life for my child and that didn’t happen so I’m felt real out of place. I was in survival mode. I got a kid to feed and I have to be the best representation for her.

After the second album came out, and nothing happened, I went to cosmetology school. I always wanted to own my own salon. I enrolled before I got the call from Matthew Knowles so now I’m here again, I’m going to school. I graduated last December and now I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist as of April of this year. I’ve been working in a salon since January. I wasn’t really tripping off of the singing thing. It’s hard to chase something that in your eyes hasn’t been really nice to you. Up until two months ago, I’ve been working in the baddest hair salon called Blendz in Atlanta.

CL: Now you’re on Unsung/VerveForecast with label mates like the legendary Herbie Hancock, Ledisi, Queen Latifah and Diana Krall. Do you feel any pressure at all?

SA: I still kinda feel like lil ole me? Are they sure? It’s hard-that’s why I get those nerves and things. It’s like you gotta live up to this. When we were in Philly the other day, they decided they wanted me to perform. I just started freaking out cuz I wasn’t ready for that. I wasn’t prepared for that, nobody told me. I just let go of it and go in there and give it my all. When you be gone as long as I been gone and been through what I’ve been through, sometimes you need that reassurance. It does eat at your confidence. I need somebody to see to say “you killed it”. I’m glad I have good people around me and tell me that was horrible.

CL: 2010 seems like the year of comebacks for “real sangers” ie. Faith and Keke Wyatt. What female singers do you like and admire?

SA: All of ones you named. Fantasia, Kelly Price, Faith, Monica, Tweet, (waiting for her new cd to drop) Jazmine Sullivan...that gurl is so bad. It don’t make no sense. She wrote me a record when she was 14 years old and she still sound the same. I’ve always straddled that line of superstar and fan. I’m a fan...I’m a consumer. What do you mean compete with these girls? I did a show with Faith in Augusta and she told me “I saw Mike City and I got a copy of your album. I’m going to text you and tell you what songs I like”. Like huh? That don’t even sound right. She texted me the other day like “I hope all is well”. I’m just blessed to be apart of it. That’s good enough for me.

CL: What advice do you give aspiring singers?

SA: Know your craft. Nurses go to nursing school. Cosmetologists go to cosmetology school. What school do you go to if you wanna be star? 9th Wonder was teaching a class at North Carolina Central University, showing students how to work instruments. Know your craft. Read them books, you may not know the terminology now but you’re going to come across them again. What’s going to be make you different? I didn’t think about imaging when I came out. What I’m going to look and whose going to do my hair. I didn’t think about magazines or radio. I remember the first time I did radio in Philadelphia. They slid an itinerary up under my door saying I had to be up by 5 or 6 in the morning. I just did a show last night. Are they crazy? Where they do that at?

I called Macy Gray like “these fools want me to be up at 5 in the morning”. She goes (imitating Macy) “Sunshine that’s what you do on the road”. They didn’t tell me, I didn’t know. Then I remembered when I used to drive to school in the morning I would hear Mary J. Blige doing interviews. Think about who you want to manage you. You got these people up in those executive offices and I can’t sing because of it. It’s this book out called The Yellow Pages of Rock . Go and get that book cuz it has everybody name in that book at every one of those labels and offices. who does what, their numbers and email addresses. Get yourself in order. Yea well I can sing...that’s great but he can sing and she can too. Your talent means nothing if you don’t know what to do with it.

CL: In 2000, when you first came out, artists of your caliber had more TV exposure. Now if you aren’t doing the Dougie or some silly dance or have a major record deal you won’t be on 106 & Park’s countdown. You probably will be on VH-1 Soul, but you have to have that cable provider in order to see it or listen to Pandora. What’s the record label’s plan of action to promote this album?

SA: I might be revealing some secrets here but...radio runs by payola. In my mind, that basically determines what radio station you will be played on. Now I’m on an independent label and this is how much we can afford. Unfortunately, I feel the same way. My song aint being played on mainstream radio and nobody knows my record is out. I listen to the Dougie station and I don’t hear my song. I know that I want different so I’m going to do different. I want to be open to everything. If they want us to sing, well then we going to sing.

CL: Are you doing a tour?

SA: We are doing a promotional tour right now. I’m going to be doing a major tour with Avant and some other people. Maybe El Debarge and Kem. That’s the hardest part for me, not to hear my song on the station that me and all my friends listen to. You go somewhere and you try to tell people that your record is out and they say “why it aint on the radio?” It’s hard, but we are going to keep working. The first person that comes to mind is Robin Thicke. He worked that record to death and now he’s a household name. So we are going to try to be everywhere we can be and keep working.

Marsha Ambrosius Promised You a Sextape

Marsha Ambrosius streamed live from Philly last night while watching Black Girls Rock and she  let her fans know that her album Late Nights Early Mornings was pushed back yet again due to legalities. The other half of Floetry stressed that she pushed it back because she has so many producers on the album that she has to pay and they need more time, clear samples, etc. The sultry singer released yet another mixtape entitled Sextape to hold us over during "cuffing" season. This is the 1st installment to the 4 part mixtape series. "A compilation of my favorite songs to make you wanna make love", is the message she left on her SoundCloud page over the weekend.

I just love her harmony. Ronald Isley aka Mr. Big is famous for making ladies moist but the two of them on Sensuality Pt. 1 & 2 is really going to make the lovers hot and heavy. Perhaps some babies will be made off of the Sextape. You never know. Make sure you listen to this almost 20 minute mixtape with someone you like/lust/love. LOL

The Wait Is Over- The Floacist Is Back!

Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart has moved beyond her Seven- Time Grammy Nominated Neo Soul duo, Floetry and is set to release her brand new album The Floacist Presents: Floetic Soul, in stores November 9th. The U.K. born poet sat down with me last week while she was in Baltimore on her promo tour. She talked about the new album, going solo, poetry and reuniting with the other half of Floetry, Marsha Ambrosius. Shout out to Gyspy Soul for setting up the interview!

Chanel Laren: How has being in Floetry shaped you as a solo artist?

Floacist: Floetry was a manifestation of my dreams which were to take poetry and make it accessible to a broader audience- a musical audience. It’s poetic delivery and musical intent that’s the mantra I created. At 19, we started a spoken word collective which was 3 Plus 1. In fact my business partner, now husband was in the group. We were young and had a whole bunch to say, wanted to say it and did. Floetry came from that movement. I ended up inviting my friend (Marsha) out to sing some hooks. I needed hooks cuz you can’t be hitting people with 20 minute pieces so I had to break it up. That study has molded me into a solo artist. More so being a poet got me to the Floetry part. I suppose now I’m doing the same as before just...it’s just me.

CL: Your first single is called Forever which features Musiq Soulchild. Did you release that song intentionally because there was a singer on there to kind of help the Floetry fans transition from the group to now your solo project or was it just a hot song?

Floacist: It was a hot song. I’m singing on Forever as well. I sang some of the Floetry stuff too. Obviously for the audience it's different. Me and Marsha was like a ménage à trois,  like on  Getting Late. You got these two chicks just going hard. It was really nice to do. I don’t really try to plan or figure out what I’ve got to do for the audience to be able to...I just create. That’s my offer to the audience, more so not playing a head game. I just loved the song. I loved it before I put Musiq on there and I loved it after. And I love- love.

CL: What was the formula for recording this album?

Floacist: I’m doing whatever needs to be done. It means the Floacist-my flow exists. So wherever I need to go to deliver that’s where I’ll go. Whatever it takes to tell the story, the vibe and the feeling. There is singing on there and a straight kind of speak, spoken voice. There is a more rhythmic percussive voice, and rhyme approach.Whatever needs to be...is.

CL: Would you change anything about your 10 year musical journey?

Floacist: No, no not a thing. Not even things that I think I might change-naw. I’ve had a (she reflects with a smile on her face)...my life is pretty awesome and it’s flow. Would I change anything? No, cuz to change anything means that we aren’t sitting in this room right now and even if we are... it wouldn’t be this room. Change the future, aint no sense in trying to change the past.

CL: You’re a screenwriter...are you reading any scripts? Will we be seeing you in any movies or plays?

Floacist: Absolutely, yes yes and yes. If you don’t see me for awhile that means I’m writing. You know a writer doesn’t always have to be sitting out on a stage to write. I have books and I have plays. There is much to come but right now I am focusing on my baby and that is my new cd. But I will tell you I have an affirmation book that I am working on right now and poetry books. Writing is really at the base of my feet.

CL: Are you planning on every doing anything in the future with Marsha?

Floacist: I love the fact that people think that I can see into the future. We make different music right now and I think everybody is aware of that. The doors of Floetry will always be open to my sista, but we have to be making the same music. I’m committed to a certain line and energy and I have no desire or interest to come outside of that space. I’ll rub my crystal ball and get back to you though. We’ll see.

What In The Sam Heezy?!

Michael Jackson is rolling around in his blinged out coffin screaming, "Damn Damn Damn Quincy". One of the best producers in the world, Quincy Jones recruited Robin Thicke and T-Pain to remake P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).  He lately has showed a HUGE lapse in muscial judgement. I know he is like 85 years old and all but he needs to turn up his hearing aid. I've always wanted Mr. Jones to be my suga daddy...but after this song I have to rethink some things.

First of all, P.Y.T. is my one of my favorite MJ songs, so I was crushed when I heard this tomfoolery that one would call a song. Classics should not be touched...especially not by T-Pain. Quincy Jones' latest album Q: Soul Bossa Nostra features this disaster of song. If you can stand it, take a listen.

T.I. releases new video before jail

The King of the South T.I. released his new video for his song Get Back Up featuring Chris Brown right before he returned to jail to serve his 11 month sentence. That "redemption" single is off of the rappers new album No Mercy, in stores December 7th.

Willow Fever

Lawd lawd, lawd! This little girl is killing me. I just got sight of this video of Willow on Ellen. The 10 year old made her first television appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show today. What can I say? I'm truly blown away! First of all opening with Only Girl in The World by Rihanna was HOT! My mouth was on the floor. Sis got some pipes. The whole performance was stellar...that might be pumping it up a bit much but I was impressed. Nowadays you don't see artists dancing, full out performing without lip syncing so for me...that was wonderful to see such young talent. If anybody is reading from Roc Nation or the Grammys, yall should have these two ladies on the same stage performing. That would finally get your viewership back up.
